  • Reusable (real) nappies

    Jun 05, 2017
    NLWA pays a subsidy of £54.15 per baby to parents in north London who use reusable (real) nappies rather than disposable ones. The level of subsidy reflects the saving to NLWA of not having to dispose of the babies’ disposable nappies.

  • Unwanted Mail Reduction

    NLWA’s ‘Say No to unwanted mail’ campaign aimed to raise awareness of unwanted mail reduction and offer householders useful information about the different ways by which they could take action to reduce the amount of unwanted mail they received.

  • Waste Education

    In 2016 NLWA tendered for an education project in which specialist educators would work intensively with 14 schools, two in each of the seven north London boroughs to encourage waste reduction, reuse and recycling in each school as well as to deliver an increased level of academic understanding of these issues.

  • Work with Local Businesses

    Bag it Up and Reuse project The government’s plastic bag levy, which came into force on 5 October 2015, required large retailers to charge customers 5p for every single use plastic bag they distribute. The levy has had a significant impact on the number of single use plastic carrier bags being used by large retailers’ customers and distributed by major retailers.

  • Recycling Outreach Work

    NLWA continues to support the recycling services offered by the seven north London boroughs and a total of 59 events have been delivered in 2016/17, 33 of which focused solely on mixed dry recycling, with a further 26 promoting food waste recycling. A total of 782 north London residents were engaged in conversations about mixed dry and 1,978 residents were engaged in conversations about food waste recycling.

  • Reuse activities across north London

    Activity to mark European Week for Waste Reduction: The London Upcycling Show For the eighth year running, NLWA participated in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), a LIFE+ funded initiative aiming to promote the implementation of awareness-raising actions about sustainable resource and waste management during a single week.

  • Food Waste Prevention Advertising

    In March 2017 a two-week digital food waste campaign was delivered between Monday 20 March and Sunday 2 April. The campaign was centred around a free prize draw, offering residents £100 towards their food shop if they participated by re-tweeting one of the dedicated food waste tweets issued by NLWA during the campaign.

  • North London Pumpkin Rescue Festival

    During 2016/17, NLWA appointed Hubbub to hold a second North London Pumpkin Rescue Festival. Events took place throughout October, culminating in two Surplus Pumpkin Feasts, one held on Saturday 29 October in Walthamstow Town Square (Waltham Forest) and a second which took place on Sunday 30 October at Angel Central shopping centre (Islington).

  • Waste Less, Lunch Free Events

    This year, a series of ‘Waste Less, Lunch Free’ events was held across north London. Keep Britain Tidy won the contract to deliver the events, which were held throughout September. Each event consisted of a cookery demonstration and information stand set up in a public space from which passers-by were offered portions of free food, as a way to draw them into conversations about food waste reduction and recycling.

  • New Leaf Project

    In the summer of 2016, Hubbub successfully tendered, and was as a result contracted, to deliver a new summer-themed food waste project, which was subsequently called ‘New Leaf’. The project focused on salad waste reduction. The project consisted of three elements; Surplus Salad Feast, a main flagship event; cookery sessions; and composting sessions. A short film was produced to promote the project’s messages further, which is available to view at wiseuptowaste.org.uk/waste-less/food-waste/new-leaf.

  • Involving the Community, Colleges and Universities

    Waste prevention talks were delivered to 32 local community groups, engaging 373 people. The sessions consisted of either a presentation for larger groups with time for questions and answers, or a workshop for smaller groups, with interactive activities including games and quizzes. Talks were delivered to and attended by diverse audiences.

  • Food Waste Prevention - Outreach Events

    Outreach food waste prevention events Over the course of 2016/17, NLWA’s Waste Prevention team delivered a programme of face-to-face outreach activity to encourage food waste reduction across north London. The team put up information stands in a range of settings, such as at festivals and fairs, in libraries, community centres, offices, universities and leisure centres.

  • North London Waste Authority responds to government’s draft Industrial Strategy

    Central government is currently consulting on a draft Industrial Strategy (IS) which is set to address long-term challenges to the UK economy. North London Waste Authority (NLWA) has reviewed the draft strategy and Authority Members approved a response at their meeting on 5 April 2017.

  • Secretary of State approves development consent order for new energy recovery facility in Edmonton

    The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has today (24 February) granted a development consent order (DCO) for North London Waste Authority (NLWA) to build a replacement energy recovery facility, and associated development at the Edmonton EcoPark.
