Some key statistics about north London and the waste challenges it faces:

  • 878,817 tonnes of municipal waste were collected within north London in 2010-11.
  • The Authority’s 2010-11 performance for combined recycling,  composting and reuse of household waste was 29.4%.
  • The Authority’s combined recovery rate (recycling, composting, reuse and energy from waste) of all the ‘municipal’ waste that it handled in 2010/11 was  71%.
  • In 2010/11 the Authority sent 258,1644 tonnes of municipal waste to landfill,(29% of the total).
  • North London has good road, rail and water links and is in close proximity to all five of London’s airports.
  • The North London environment is a mix of suburban town centres, industrial and technological centres, villages, open spaces and parkland including the Lee Valley Regional Park and Moat Mount Nature Reserve.
  • The total population of north London is 1.702  million people who live in 764,540 dwellings .
  • It is anticipated that the population of north London will rise over the forthcoming years as part of a London wide trend.
