The hours of opening are:
Monday to Saturday - 8am to 8pm
Sundays and Public Holidays - 8.30am to 8pm
Christmas Day and New Years Day – Closed
Please note - The site is occasionally closed for short periods of time during operational hours to allow containers to be moved or changed.
Access
Cars - Car access is via Hornsey Street. Vehicles must be below 1.9 metres in height to enter.
Pedestrians – Pedestrians should use the mixed recycling points (which take paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and cardboard) on the corner of Caledonian Road and Cottage Road, opposite Caledonian Road tube station. All other materials, or items too large for the bins, should be taken to the recycling centre’s security office on Cottage Road between 8am and 8pm. The staff will arrange for the items to be recycled at the HWRC.
Trailers - Due to tight turning circles outside the HWRC, vehicles with trailers are not permitted to visit the HWRC on weekends or bank holidays.
Charities - Charities are entitled to drop off recycling for free at the centre. Please bring proof of your charitable status, such as headed notepaper, with you to ensure access.
What can I bring to the HWRC?
The Household Waste Recycling Centre will accept the following materials:

- toner and printer cartridges - £1 is donated to the Mayor's World Cancer Research Fund charity for each printer cartridge recycled.

- cardboard - Includes: flattened brown and white cardboard, flattened cardboard boxes. Excludes: cardboard contaminated with food, polystyrene packing, strapping
- CDs and DVDs
- DIY waste - Includes: hardcore, bricks and concrete. Excludes: paint and other liquid waste, ceramic tiles, soil
- electrical items (small and large)

- paper - Includes: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, white paper, yellow pages. Excludes: plastic sleeves, books, laminated paper, envelopes with plastic windows

Asbestos Disposal
We also accept Asbestos (cement-bonded) for disposal in deep landfill. Please note: Asbestos can be dropped off by appointment only. Call 020 8884 5645 to make an appointment. The supervisor will need to:
• check that there is enough space in the asbestos container
• know how much asbestos you need to dispose of
Before taking the asbestos waste to the recycling centre, ensure that it is double wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape, or alternatively in thick plastic sacks if the pieces are small. Take care not to break any material to fit into a bag. Under no circumstances should you use a saw or disc cutter to reduce the size of the sheets as this will cause asbestos dust to be generated.
Hazardous Waste
The London Borough of Islington operates a hazardous waste collection and disposal service in partnership with the City of London for Islington residents. This service helps you deal with your household waste responsibly and legally.
The contract allows for the removal and disposal of a variety of hazardous wastes such as chemicals, asbestos and poisons. 'Hazardous waste' is a material that poses potential threats to public health or the environment. It may be flammable, corrosive, toxic, infectious or explosive.
You may have this type of waste in the form of marked or unmarked containers containing chemicals or bags of suspected asbestos at home, or you may see it dumped on the street. You should not handle hazardous waste if you are not sure what it is

Paint
Paint is not accepted at the Islington Household Waste Recycling Centre.
If your paint is reusable, you might be able to donate it to someone else who can use it at www.communityrepaint.org.uk or you can also give it away by advertising it on Freecycle.
Removal of items from the HWRC by the public
We have a legal duty to ensure all the waste brought to the Centre is disposed of or recycled by an authorised organisation. The handling of waste is subject to strict regulatory controls. Furthermore, waste can be contaminated or hazardous and must be handled with extreme caution.
For these reasons, North London Waste Authority does not allow items to be removed from the site by any unauthorised persons or organisations.
