Top 10 tips for reducing waste:
- borrow books from your local library rather than buying new ones;
- always try to repair things instead of throwing them away;
- avoid disposable items that are used once and then thrown away such as razors and batteries;
- re-use envelopes by putting labels over old addresses;
- if paper has only been written or printed on one side, why not use the other side for messages, notes and lists?
- re-use old containers and buy refills for sturdy packs such as washing powders, liquids, salt, etc;
- say “no” to single use plastic carrier bags. Take your own bags when you go shopping;
- take last night’s leftovers to work for lunch;
- wherever possible, look for unpackaged products like loose fruit and vegetables and
- use re-usable towels, rags, and sponges for cleaning and dusting.
