Opt-out boxes
When you give your name and address to a company, or fill in a form, remember to tick the box(es) to say that you do not want to receive further correspondence, information about 'other products and services', or consent to having your details shared with other 'carefully selected' partners. If you do not tick these boxes, your details will be added to several new mailing lists resulting in even more unwanted mail.
Edited electoral register
When you receive your electoral register form from the council, tick the box to remove your details from the edited version of the electoral register. This list can be bought by anyone for any purpose and is often used to create mailing lists for junk mail. Your details will still appear on the full electoral register.
Existing mailing lists
If you currently receive mail that does not interest you, contact the relevant company or organisation and request to have your details removed from their databases.
Not another bill?!
Most banks and utility companies now offer online statements and bills. So if the sight of more bills coming through the letterbox depresses you, opt for electronic versions of bills and statements instead.
