Almost 1 million tonnes of rubbish is produced in North London every year (enough to fill 8 football stadiums top to bottom)
By 2020 we will be generating up to 44% more per year (that's another 4 football stadiums!)
Throwing away rubbish is expensive - by 2011 the tax alone for sending waste to landfill will be £48 per tonne - around 8 times the cost to landfill a tonne of waste in 1996.
Currently in North London about 27% of rubbish is recycled, by 2020 it is hoped that we can reach a target of 50%.
To achieve this we want to make it easy for you to be able to recycle as much of your waste as possible.
We aim to:
Provide households in North London with easily accessible recycling and composting collection services
Improve the efficiency of our reuse and recycling centres, diverting at least 60% of this rubbish away from landfill sites
Provide new facilities n North London to enable us to recycle and compost the majority of the area's waste
You can help by:
Separating your rubbish for recycling
Separating your rubbish for composting at home or with a local community group
Recycling more when you visit your local re-use and recycling centre
It is now possible to recycle more rubbish than ever before, everything from paper and cans through to kettles and fridges.
