Almost 1 million tonnes of rubbish is produced in North London every year (enough to fill 8 football stadiums top to bottom)
By 2020 we will be generating up to 44% more per year (that's another 4 football stadiums!)
Throwing away rubbish is expensive - by 2011 the tax alone for sending waste to landfill will be £48 per tonne - around 8 times the cost to landfill a tonne of waste in 1996.
Before we consider recycling an item we should look to see if we can reuse it.
Many items can be reused – from carrier bags and clothes through to books and furniture.
Reusing an object uses far less energy than recycling it and is much kinder to the environment.

Reuse research
The NLWA has commissioned a considerable amount of research into the potential for expanding furniture reuse in North London. This research builds upon a study that focuses on reuse capacity across the whole of London. The study highlighted gaps in provision in the NLWA area, relative to other parts of the capital. The report from this study entitled 'Third Sector Reuse Capacity in London' (July 2008), Commissioned by the Greater London Authority in partnership with the Government Office for London, London Councils, North London Waste Authority, the London Recycling Officers' Group and the Association of London Cleansing Officers, is available on the GLA website at www.london.gov.uk. The work was partly funded by the NLWA.
