North London Waste Authority invites schools to find innovative ways to reduce waste to secure their place at the North London Student Sustainability Conference (NLSSC) on 20 November 2025 at EcoPark House, Edmonton.
Winning schools will be invited to participate in the NLSSC to devise and develop an action plan for creating a low-waste north London.
The Conference will feature debates, presentations, and speeches from our guest speakers. There will also be a Q&A session with one of our guest speakers.
As part of the Conference, participants can win awards, and the best team will be awarded a £300 voucher for their school*.
*NLWA reserved the right to amend or remove prizes at any point.
The competition will be open to teams of Year 8 students in Enfield, Barnet, Islington, Camden, Waltham Forest, Hackney and Haringey.
These teams must be formed of four students who are willing and able to participate in the Conference in November 2025.
Please note, only one team of four pupils can enter from each school.
The team of students need to identify an issue related to waste or recycling in their school and propose an innovative solution in a 2-minute video. In the video submission, all team members should actively participate and the proposed solution should be both sustainable and achievable.
The videos can be either narrated PowerPoint presentations or a filmed presentation.
Our education team will judge the videos based on:
- Evidence of research into the issue
- Quality of argument
- Quality of spoken language
- Innovation and creativity of solution

This can only be completed by the teacher who will accompany students to the Conference, if successful.
When submitting your video, please ensure that the file name includes your school and borough.

Submissions are open until 5pm on the 24 July 2025.
Submissions sent after the deadline will not be accepted.
The Education team will contact the successful teams in early September 2025.
