TV legends and upcycling presenters form the judging panel for this year’s London Upcycling Show. Ground Force star Tommy Walsh, ‘Love your home and garden’ presenter Kunle Barker, ‘The Home Genie’ presenter and blogger Georgina Burnett and ‘Upcycling Hour’ creator Chris Billinghurst will judge this year’s London Upcycling Show 2018.

The third London Upcycling Show, which is funded by North London Waste Authority (NLWA), is London’s only free event dedicated to upcycling. NLWA have joined forces with environmental and social regeneration charity Groundwork London to run the event during the European Week for Waste Reduction (17 to 25 November).
It is estimated that 10 million household items, from sofas to wardrobes, are thrown away every year, 3 million of which could be re-used. The London Upcycling Show aims to encourage north Londoners to consider upcycling, reusing or repairing furniture before throwing it away; demonstrating that all it takes is a splash of paint and a slice of imagination to give items destined for waste a new lease of life.
Councillor Clyde Loakes, Chair of North London Waste Authority said: "The London Upcycling Show is a great event and I’m pleased to see it returning for its third year. It has been really interesting to see how the household items have been transformed at previous events to save them from simply going to waste. I’m looking forward to seeing what fantastic items are upcycled this year."
The fun, family-friendly event showcases upcycling at its very best, and is packed with practical workshops including child friendly activities, interactive demonstrations and creative exhibitions. The show will feature an upcycling competition in which 25 north London residents from Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest will display an upcycled item of furniture, rescued from waste.
Georgina, Kunle, Chris and Tommy will announce one winner from each of the five categories: armchair, bedside cabinet for children, side table, chest of drawers and upright chair and the overall winner. There’ll even be a chance for the audience to vote for their favourite entry in the ‘People’s Choice’ category. Each winner will receive a £100 voucher to spend at a DIY store.
Kunle Barker is a construction expert, journalist, TV presenter on ITV’s’ Love your Home and Garden’ as well as a Grand Designs panellist. He began his construction career whilst studying for an MA at the University of Leeds. In 2004 Kunle set up Illustrious Homes an award winning Construction and Design Management Company.
Georgina Burnett brings to the judging panel her experience of DIY, interior design and upcycling, which she shares through her blog and online channel The Home Genie. She has also written expert advice for The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, 25 Beautiful Homes and a number of other interiors magazines.
Tommy Walsh brings his extensive DIY experience, well-known through the hugely popular TV series Ground Force. He has since presented several TV shows including Tommy Walsh’s Eco House and Fix it yourself. Tommy's first book, DIY Survival, was in the UK's bestsellers list and he has since published a further 4 DIY project books.
Chris Billinghurst is an eco decorator and established authority on creative reuse for interiors as well as the founder of Upcycled Hour, the UK's only agency for the support and promotion of professional upcyclers and the elevation of the standards and status of upcycling.
As well as the thrill of the competition judging, the event will also include an interactive live ‘Create’ upcycling challenge; attendees will be grouped together in two teams and will need to convert rescued materials into fantastic new household items.
Over 200 Londoners came to last year’s London Upcycling Show, which directly diverted 559kg of furniture from disposal via the upcycling of competition items.
