Developmental play activities
A great range of activities for teaching young learners about the circular economy through play and creativity.
In this activity, children will explore how they can care for the wildlife around school by making bird feeders using reused materials. Children will take ownership of designing and constructing their own bird feeders, using everyday waste materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Children will learn that waste materials can be reused to help animals and the environment. If the bird feeders are no longer needed, the materials can be deconstructed and reused for a different purpose.
In this activity, children will investigate composting as a way of caring for our planet and reducing waste. Using fruit and vegetable peelings from their free morning snack, children will take ownership of collecting, sorting, and adding food waste to a class compost bin. Through hands‑on exploration, children will learn that food waste does not need to be thrown away and can instead be turned into something useful for growing plants.
In this activity children will use recycled yoghurt pots to plant and look after seeds. The seeds can be collected from snack time from the various free fruits and vegetables provided for EYFS in London (tomatoes, cucumbers, pears, apples etc). This activity aims to get students to care for the things around them, taking care to monitor and look after their seeds as they grow.
In this activity children will reuse plastic bottles to create their own watering cans. Children can choose between different recycled containers such as milk bottles or plastic drinks bottles with holes in the lids. They will decorate their bottle and then use it independently to water plants. This activity supports children’s understanding of caring for the environment by reusing materials while also building independence and responsibility in caring for plants
