Sustainability summit celebrates women empowering a greener north London

Women and girls from across north London will come together for an all-day event aimed at strengthening their shared commitment to a healthier and more sustainable future.

Hosted by EmpowerHer and the Haringey Women’s Collective, the Whole-Life Cycles Summit will explore green living, showcase local creativity and celebrate those shaping change. Organisers Sonja Camara and Jesslyn Robert will also use the event to launch two exciting new initiatives. The Women’s Health Champions Network will support women to become advocates for health and wellbeing in their communities, while the Hair Bank Collective will provide access to quality hair products, braid and haircare essentials in a welcoming and confidential environment.

Sonja and Jesslyn run the Women & Girls Leading the Reuse Revolution programme, which received a North London Community Fund grant this year to empower women and girls to reduce waste through sustainable menstrual products, textile reuse, and innovative plastic braid recycling.

They said: “Over the past six months, the Women & Girls Leading the Reuse Revolution programme has empowered women and girls to develop new skills, embrace sustainable practices, strengthen wellbeing and build confidence as change-makers within their communities.

“We are incredibly proud of the participants whose creativity, resilience and commitment have inspired positive change and demonstrated the power of community-led action.

“We are excited to continue this journey. Together, we can build stronger, healthier and more connected communities where women and girls are empowered to thrive.”

North London Waste Authority (NLWA) established the North London Community Fund to support waste prevention initiatives across its seven constituent boroughs, with £250,000 set aside each year in grants for community-based (non-profit-making) organisations. A record-breaking 23 community groups received funding this year, including those focused on repair skills, composting and waste-free cooking.

The Whole-Life Cycles Summit will take place on Saturday (24 October) at Chestnuts Community Centre in Tottenham.
