baby being changed into a reusable nappy

Swap just one disposable nappy for a reusable one and save 900 from waste

Around eight million disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every day. These plastic-based single-use items make up an estimated 2% to 3% of all household waste.

That’s why, North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is encouraging north London parents, guardians and parents-to-be to sign up for our reusable nappy subsidy scheme.

The scheme is open to north London residents who are pregnant or have a baby under 18 months, with support to help them start thinking about reusable nappies for their little ones.

Just one a day

Contrary to popular belief, using reusable nappies doesn’t have to be all or nothing. By replacing just one disposable nappy a day, parents could save 365 nappies from waste every year, and around 900 over their baby’s nappy-wearing stage.

Eligible north London residents can apply for the subsidy scheme. Once their application is successful they will receive a £70 voucher to be redeemed against a pack of reusable nappies or a trial laundry service.

This helps offset the start-up costs and allows parents to switch to reusables or alternate between reusables and disposables if they wish, removing the pressure and making the transition easier.

Top five reasons to choose reusable nappies

There are lots of common misconceptions around reusable nappies, including the mess and effort often thought to be involved in washing them.

In reality, the benefits go way beyond protecting our environment - from saving money to preventing nappy rash and increasing comfort.

Here are our top reasons to opt for reusable nappies:

  1. They are better for the planet – disposable nappies all end up as waste.
  2. They save money – reusable nappies can work out cheaper than disposables over time.
  3. They are kinder to skin – free from harmful chemicals and plastics, reusables help protect delicate skin.
  4. They support potty training – they help little ones recognise when they’re wet.
  5. They come in great designs – available in lots of colours and patterns to suit every style.

For those still unsure, it might be helpful to hear real life accounts of reusable nappy use and the positive impact it can have.
