Bottoms up for Real Nappy Week 2016

North London Waste Authority (NLWA), through its Wise Up To Waste campaign, is celebrating ‘Real Nappy Week’; 18 – 24 April 2016, by encouraging parents / careers in north London to claim £54.15 worth of real nappies for free.

NLWA has supported the use of real nappies in north London since 2005 by offering parents a subsidy of up to £54.15 to purchase and trial real nappies.

Residents from Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest can save money and the environment, reducing their household waste by up to half if reusable nappies are used instead of disposable ones.

Amanda Irwin; mum of six month old Beatrix from Islington, was a ‘real nappy sceptic’ until she went to a demo to see how they worked. She then claimed her free real nappies voucher and has never looked back. Amanda says: “I’ve been using real nappies with Beatrix since she was born, they are easy to use and we have a variety of different brands. The nappy she wears usually just depends on which one matches her outfit the best! I would highly recommend other mums give reusable nappies a go. Even part time use is a help with your household costs and waste, they’re better for the environment, your baby is likely to potty train much earlier, plus they come in super cute colours and prints!”

 These are Amanda’s top reasons for why she prefers real nappies:

1. They create much less waste - we only throw out the equivalent of one tiny nappy sack of waste every couple of weeks (and this is only because we sometimes use disposable wipes and liners);

2.   They are kinder to Bea's skin, I like it that there are no chemicals in her nappies;

3. No nappy rash;

4.    No poo explosions! We have friends that tell us about how their baby has had to have an entire outfit change because the contents of their nappy has come out of the top and all over them. We have never had this using cloth;

5. They are so cute! I love the way her cloth bum looks. We essentially see her nappies as a piece of clothing, plus, having nice nappies makes changing her fun rather than a "chore."

Real nappies are absorbent, fun, fashionable, easy to use and come in a variety of styles. With all of the styles, biodegradable (flushable) paper liners or washable (cotton, silk and fleece) liners can be placed inside nappies to catch the contents! So if you haven’t tried them, give them a go, you may just be pleasantly surprised.
