1. Written Policy and Procedures

The Authority does not maintain a standalone internal corporate policy document for this, instead our binding procedures are established via the acceptance criteria applied at our managed facilities by our operational partner, LondonEnergy Ltd. Request for information on recycling asbestos at recycling centres | NLWA (this was a previous request)

Please note that asbestos cannot be recycled under any circumstances, it is processed strictly as hazardous waste for secure disposal.

2. Recommended Disposal Methods As the Waste Disposal Authority for north London, the NLWA does not operate a direct doorstep collection service. We recommend and support two specific pathways for residents to safely handle and dispose of household cement asbestos:

  • Option A: Self-Disposal via Designated Waste Facility (By Appointment Only) Residents can self-dispose of household asbestos at our designated site: Hornsey Street Reuse and Recycling Centre (Islington). This is allowed strictly by appointment only, and the material cannot be accepted at the pedestrian drop-off zones
  • Procedure: Residents must book via phone (07557 205 292) or email (hornseystrandr@londonenergyltd.com).
  • Handling Requirement: The asbestos must be completely double-wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape before arrival.

  • Option B: Contracted/Partnered Removal (Home Collection) For residents who prefer or require a collection service rather than self-disposal, the NLWA works in partnership with the City of London Hazardous Waste Service. North London residents can arrange for a home collection of household asbestos through this service.

Publicly Available Information and Links: In accordance with Regulation 6(1)(b) of the EIR, we are directing you to where this information is publicly maintained on our portal:

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or via our enquiry form quoting the reference above.

Kind regards
