Further to our email acknowledging your freedom of information request (reference 2025-244), we can confirm that we hold the information you have requested. Our response is as follows:

North London Waste Authority's (NLWA) statutory duties are set out on our website accessible by the link NLWA-services. Since the duties mentioned above were imposed in 2006 NLWA has developed the following strategies and implemented the following actions in relation to biodiversity: The North London Joint Waste Strategy (2004-2020)

However, since the enactment of the Environment Act 2021 the Authority has been working on renewing its Joint Waste Strategy (JWS). The draft North London Joint Waste Strategy (2025-2040) which currently sets out the framework for our actions and those of the seven constituent borough councils is subject to a Strategic Environmental Assessment which evaluates amongst other things: “The objective to protect and increase biodiversity, flora and fauna”. The full results of the assessment is available at Appendix-4-JWS-Environmental-Report.pdf

For the duration of the strategy, the NLWA will be required to monitor the impact of strategy, to identify any environmental effects that occur due to preferred strategic approach of carrying out its functions.

By far the biggest aspect of our work in managing waste at present is the north London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) our project to replace the Edmonton energy from waste plant with a new energy recovery facility (ERF). You can find full details of how we will ensure the local environment is protected, including conserving biodiversity, on the project website: Environment | North London Heat and Power Project

There is a useful document 'North London Heat and Power Project - Environmental Commitments and Mitigation Schedule' which is available here on the NLHPP website: Environmental commitments and mitigations. This 25-page document lists all the environmental commitments and mitigations contained within the Development Consent Order (DCO) for the replacement energy recovery facility and details the document and section in which each commitment is located.

The 'North London Heat and Power Project- Environmental Statement: Non-Technical Summary' also provides a useful overview of in particular, the environmental impact assessment findings for the project. Environment Statement: Non-Technical Summary

Details of the Technical Environmental Statement can be found on the website: Environment Statement full report
