Request for information on disposal of dangerous chemicals

Good afternoon, 

 Further to our acknowledgement of your freedom of information request with reference (2026-281), our response is as follows. 

Your request: 

How does the facility filter out dangerous chemicals. As an example old thermometers or barometers containing mercury. 

Our response 

Applicable legislation does not require LondonEnergy Ltd. to implement a process for the specific identification and removal of individual mercury-containing items, such as household thermometers or barometers, from the incoming residual waste stream. 

The management of mercury-containing items is primarily addressed through separate collection and disposal arrangements, with householders and other waste producers encouraged to dispose of such items through appropriate hazardous waste channels where available. 

Where small quantities of mercury-containing items are present within the residual waste stream, the company operates in accordance with its environmental permits and regulatory requirements, including the use of emissions control and treatment systems designed to manage pollutants arising from the waste treatment process. 

Any dangerous chemicals generated through site operations or maintenance activities are managed and disposed of in accordance with applicable environmental and waste management legislation. 

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or via our enquiry form quoting the reference above.  

If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or via their online portal at ico.org.uk. The Information Commissioner will not usually accept complaints before a review has been completed.
