Request
Please advise whether you recapture waste metal, such as small scrap and dirty food containers, that people throw into black bins. For example, please state what happens to staples and metal spiral bindings of books that are thrown into the black wheelie bins, or to metal fixings that are part of small items that are discarded.
Response
Further to our email acknowledging your environmental information request (reference 2025-248), our response is as follows.
Bottom ash metals are recycled through a process involving magnetic separation to extract ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The recycled metals are then sent for further processing such as melting to create new metal products, in 2024/25 the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) produced just under 8000 tonnes of Ash Metal.
