Request

Date received

How many tonnes of waste has been collected annually in the past five years in the Regis Road reuse and recycling centre? Please break it down into categories such as green waste, electrical small, electrical large, cardboard/paper, textiles, hard plastics, etc, including 'material that cannot be recycled' category. What proportion of the waste has been recycled, sent to landfill, or incinerated?

How many people use the Regis Road recycling centre? Where are the users from who currently use the centre? How many would you classify as "local" / from KT, and where do the others come from?

Our response:

Waste Tonnage and Destination Breakdown

We have provided the tonnage data you requested, broken down by material categories, in the attached spreadsheet.

Clarification on Waste Destination Categories:

We understand that the terms 'Recycled,' 'Incinerated,' and 'Landfill' do not appear as column headers in the spreadsheet. This is because the figures are reported by material names, which dictates the final destination, in line with North London Waste Authority (NLWA) reporting standards.

To clarify the destination for each material collected at the Regis Road Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC):

  • Recycled/Composted: Any tonnage listed against a specific, recoverable material under the 'Waste type' column (e.g: Green Waste, Scrap Metal, Cardboard/Paper, Plastics, WEEE, etc.) is, by definition, the amount collected and sent for recycling, reuse, or composting.
  • Incinerated (Energy from Waste - EfW): The tonnage for 'Residual Waste' under the 'Waste type' column represents the 'material that cannot be recycled' and is the default disposal route for all non-recyclable items. In line with NLWA policy, 100% of this Residual Waste is sent to the Energy from Waste (EfW) facility at the Edmonton EcoPark for incineration to generate power.
  • Landfill: The amount of municipal waste sent directly to landfill from the Regis Road RRC facility is negligible, as the primary disposal route for non-recyclable waste is EfW.

The attached data provides the precise annual tonnage for each material category and its ultimate destination.

Visitor Data

Please find attached the breakdown of visitors by borough based on the last visitor survey we completed in 2022. This data indicates the origins of the centre's users.

The total number of visitors to the Regis Road RRC for the following years are:

  • 2023: 64,448
  • 2024: 73,316
  • 2025: 60,512 (Jan-Oct only)

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or enquiry form quoting the above reference.

If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or via their online portal. The Information Commissioner will not usually accept complaints before a review has been completed.
