Response
Good afternoon,
Further to our email acknowledging your environmental information request (reference 2025-260), our response is as follows.
We can confirm that we hold the information you have requested.
You requested: A breakdown of household waste data from 2018-19 to Q2 2025/26, specifically:
a - tonnage of household waste recycled under your waste disposal responsibilities
b- tonnage of collected household recycling rejected, split by how it was then processed (such as energy-from-waste / incineration, landfill)
c- tonnage of household material recycled within England
d- tonnage of household material recycled outside of England, split by material type if possible
e - tonnage of household recycling waste exported overseas split by how it will be processed (such as recycled or incinerated)
f - if available, please provide the tonnage of household recycling waste exported overseas split by how it will be processed and destination country.
Our response: The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) reports waste management data quarterly to WasteDataFlow, the national system for local authority waste tracking.
· For parts (a) through (f) (2018/19 – 2023/24): This information is available in the public domain via WasteDataFlow. While there is no single pre-formatted report for queries D, E, and F, the data can be accessed by members of the public through the Raw Data Report. Once downloaded, this requires filtering (e.g: Column N for destinations outside the UK) and analysis of material-specific tonnages (Column X)
· For part b: Rejection data is accessible via WasteDataFlow: https://www.wastedataflow.org/. Rejected material is primarily sent for incineration within the UK, some may be processed as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) by third-party contractors
· For part (f): Please note that per national reporting standards, destination details are often limited to Outside UK, EU, or Non-EU country categories if the specific country is not provided by the reporting authority
· For parts (a) through (f) (2024/25 – Q2 2025/26): As this data has been recently submitted but is not yet appearing in the public domain, we have provided these provisional figures in the attached CSV file for your convenience. 2025/26 won’t be available to the public until August of this year.
Data Access Guidance: To access the historical raw data mentioned above, you may register for a public account at:
- WasteDataFlow: https://www.wastedataflow.org/
Please note that data for the first two quarters of 2025/26 is provisional and subject to final year end validation.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or enquiry form quoting the above reference.
If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or via their online portal. The Information Commissioner will not usually accept complaints before a review has been completed.
Kind regards,
North London Waste Authority
