The attached is taken from Barnet's circular that arrived yesterday communicating changes in service.

As you can see in the What can be recycled? infographic there are papers, glass bottles, TetraPak, cans and assorted plastic.

If one separates out the plastic and take it to Summer Lane they will only take PET bottles (water, soft drinks etc), not margarine tubs, yoghurt pots etc. Are you saying this is changing?

Thank you for the leaflet that you attached with your reply.

As far as I am aware the Summers Lane reuse and recycling centre is not changing its position on plastics and will continue to accept only PET bottles. This is based on the arrangements that NLWA inherited when they took over the operation of the reuse and recycling centre and because plastic bottles have a high value compared with other types of plastics; it makes sense to continue with this arrangement.

The issue of plastics recycling is certainly confusing with so many variations of plastic products and this is why we try to keep the communications simple and deal with more complex enquiries on a case-by-case basis. However, I have attached some more detailed guidance which may help further with what is accepted in the recycling collection service.

We have also been surprised by some of the items found in the recycling stream which regularly includes used nappies. With further investigation of this product, it seems that some people thought that the recycling logo on the packaging referred to the nappies rather than the packaging itself. Perhaps this is the same with the sanitary items you have observed.

I’m sure with the current focus on plastics there will be further changes to the information, services and end markets for this material and as these become apparent we will review the situation.
