North London Community Fund - Summary of projects

London Cycling Club (Londra Bisiklet Kulubu) is a Cycling UK affiliated group. They are non-profit community interest company based in Enfield. The group provide cycle training sessions, bike maintenance (learn to fix) sessions and community bike rides. London Cycling Club mainly focus on low-income BAME women (mainly Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot community) and children.

The fund allowed London Cycling Club to continue their work, refurbishing and donating 133 bicycles and redistributing them to low-income families in need. The organisation delivered  a total of14 bike maintenance workshops, engaging with 46 residents and created 5 pieces of upcycled bike art.

Community Focus Inclusive Arts is an Arts Centre for adults and children with disabilities. Community Focus Inclusive Arts run an exciting selection of creative and wellbeing courses and workshops for students with disabilities, autism and anyone who feels they may need extra support. 

Through the Fund, the organisation was able to teach disabled young adults employable skills such as e-commerce and textile crafts and open a shop selling the items made during the sessions.

Clapton Common Boys Club runs workshops and activities for young people from the Jewish community. The group received funding to put on a series of environmental workshops for their attendees. Clapton Common Boys Club have been educating 330 young people on waste prevention and its importance for the environment through 4 different sustainable topics and activities such as pond dipping. The group also worked with YMH Kitchen and Soup Kitchen in Stamford Hill to redistribute food to those in need.

Age UK Enfield are a charity supporting and enhancing the lives of older people - the team passionate about improving the lives of older people by ensuring they are valued, active, connected and able to live the life they choose.

The project 'Men in Sheds' received funding with an aim to create a safe, social space for men over 60 to talk to and support each other whilst also learning woodworking skills and staying active by doing so.

Abbey Community Centre is a local charity and community centre supporting people of all ages living in or near Kilburn, Camden, to lead better connected, healthier and happier lives.

The group held 45 weekly recycle art sessions for Camden residents to come and make beautiful objects from normally wasted materials such as plastic bottles and old cardboard. The project has seen 54 unique attendances throughout the year, making anything from milk bottle planters to bottle-cap jewellery, resulting in 2 project displays of the artwork. In addition, 100% of attendees said the project has helped them reduce their waste at home.

Building on a successful trial delivered in 2022, this project delivered a series of workshops and events designed to normalise climate-conscious lifestyles for people from all backgrounds within the community, while encouraging local businesses to adopt more sustainable practices. 

Throughout the project, The Inconvenient Store engaged with 20 local businesses and facilitated the exchange of 445 items of clothing, helping to extend the lifespan of textiles and reduce waste. A further 139 items of clothing were upcycled, 42 kg of textiles were recycled, and 54 household appliances were repaired through two repair cafés attended by 54 people. The project also diverted 32,375 kg of vegetables from being discarded by supporting fermentation activities.

Community participation was central to the project's success. Three clothes swap events attracted 20 attendees, while nine upcycling workshops engaged 219 participants. In addition, the project delivered 15 skills-sharing sessions, equipping residents with practical knowledge and confidence to adopt more sustainable everyday practices.

Our Yard at Clitterhouse Farm was a project focused on raising awareness of food waste prevention, tackling fly tipping, and promoting the benefits of repurposing food waste into compost.

During the project, the team installed two new composters and created a dedicated compost corner using recycled wood at Clitterhouse Farm. They established a food waste drop-off and collection point, enabling local residents to divert food waste from landfill and transform it into nutrient-rich compost for community use.

The project successfully recruited 35 households, along with café and garden volunteers, to regularly drop off their food waste. Participating families received information and education on food waste reduction and composting, including three free composting workshops. In addition, four free family cookery workshops were delivered to help residents reduce food waste through practical cooking skills. Alongside encouraging sustainable food waste management, the project also addressed fly tipping through an awareness campaign.
