Lithium-ion batteries

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries cannot go in your rubbish or recycling bins at home because they can cause chemical burns or fires if they are broken or leaking. If you put your lithium batteries (or items that contain lithium batteries) into your bins at home, they may become damaged and catch fire, in your home or in our lorries or facilities. You can take used lithium batteries to your nearest Recycle Your Electricals battery collection point or to one of our reuse and recycling centres.

If you have a damaged lithium battery, please put it in a sealed container and bring to one of our reuse and recycling centres where we will handle it safely.

Free battery collections for businesses

If you are a business or organisation is based in the UK, you can have a free battery collection service! The scheme is run by compliance schemes, working in partnership with waste management companies. Just go to Valpak battery box request and complete the form.
